What this category covers

The Private Equity or Venture Capital taxonomy entry spans two overlapping populations: investment team roles at the firm itself (Managing Partners, Partners, Principals, VP-level deal team members) and operating and portfolio-company roles (Operating Partners, portfolio CFOs and COOs, Heads of Talent and Platform at fund level).

The line between "PE/VC firm" and "PE-backed portfolio company" is classifier-dependent. A CFO at a KKR portfolio company might surface under PE/VC or under the portco's core industry (Technology, Healthcare, etc.) depending on how the job board classified the employer. This is a known boundary case — the classifier resolves it by reading the employer description and JD language, but some portco roles legitimately appear in both buckets.

At PE and VC firms, the title hierarchy is inverted relative to most other industries. A "Vice President" on the deal team is a junior professional. A "Director" actually outranks a VP. Partners run the firm. The classifier applies explicit PE/VC overrides that resolve these correctly.

How classification gets to this category

PE/VC classification applies the most aggressive industry override set on the platform:

  1. Industry identification. Firm identity is the primary signal — if the employer is a recognized PE or VC firm (KKR, Blackstone, Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, etc.) the override applies immediately. For less-known firms, "fund," "portfolio," "capital," and "investment" vocabulary in the company description trigger the PE/VC classification path.
  2. Title override application. "Partner" and "Managing Director" → CXO. "Principal" → VP-equivalent. "Vice President" on the deal team → Director-equivalent. Operating Partner roles are often reclassified to their functional specialty (COO, CFO, etc.) rather than staying generically tagged as PE/VC. See the AI Classification page for the complete override table.
  3. JD secondary signals. Investment committee membership, carried interest eligibility, portfolio company board seats, and fund-level P&L responsibilities all reinforce classification at the higher tiers.

How matching works for your search

Matching on Private Equity & Venture Capital surfaces roles confirmed as PE/VC industry — both at the firm level and at portcos that surfaced under this tagging.

Example: select PE/VC + CFO/Finance role type and your inbox narrows to Finance executive roles at PE/VC firms AND at portfolio companies that surfaced under PE/VC industry tagging. Both populations are included.

This industry has lower total volume (73 active roles at last snapshot) but high density at the CXO and VP tiers. Most roles here are genuine senior-leadership positions — the override ruleset that excludes analyst-track VPs means the executive gate is more selective in PE/VC than in any other industry on the platform.
