CEO & President is the top-operator tier — but that doesn't mean it's exclusively Fortune 500 corner offices. It captures every role where the person holds top P&L accountability for a company or a standalone business unit, regardless of company size or stage.
That includes founder-CEOs raising a Series A, Division Presidents at public industrials, Country Managers who own full-region profit responsibility, and General Managers running autonomous business units. The common thread is accountability to a board, shareholders, or an owning entity — not to another operating executive.
What falls outside: Vice Presidents of any seniority (no matter how close to the top), Chiefs of Staff, Executive Assistants to the CEO, and interim CEOs in an active search process. Those either land in a different tier or are excluded from the executive gate entirely.

How classification gets to this category
The classifier resolves a role into CEO or President by working through three layers:
- Title signals. Keywords "CEO," "Chief Executive," "President," "Founder & CEO," and "Co-Founder" are strong positive signals that resolve here immediately in most industries.
- Industry overrides. In Private Equity and VC, a "Managing Director" running a portfolio company may resolve here rather than to the VP tier. In consulting firms, a "Managing Partner" maps to CXO. These override rulesets handle the cases where the canonical title is missing. See the AI Classification page for the full industry-override table.
- Secondary signals for ambiguous cases. Compensation ($350K+ base is common at this tier), reporting line (to the Board or Chairman, not to another operating executive), and team size (full executive staff, multiple direct-report C-level peers) all contribute to resolving borderline postings.
One important negative rule: a strong compensation signal alone doesn't promote a VP-titled role into this category. Tier assignment requires either a title match or a clear organizational signal that the person is the top operator.
How matching works for your search
Matching on CEO or President is conjunctive — every filter you add narrows the intersection, it doesn't add noise.
Example: select CEO/President + Technology and your inbox shows top-operator roles at tech companies only — not VP Engineering at a tech company, not CEO roles in manufacturing. The role type and industry gate must both pass.
Tier filtering applies on top of role type. If you want only Founder-tier or CXO-tier CEOs — filtering out GM and Division President roles classified at a lower tier — toggle the seniority-tier setting in your preferences. A Growth-stage Founder/CEO and a Fortune 500 Division President are both in this category but may carry different tier tags.
