The Operational role type covers the full operations leadership stack — not just COO. It spans Chief Operating Officer, EVP Operations, SVP Operations, VP Operations, GM (operating P&L), Head of Operations, Senior Director Operations, and Director Operations seats, all classified at the executive tier.
Operations is one of the most volume-heavy categories in healthcare, consumer, and industrial — where multi-site or multi-function ownership is the differentiator between a Director and a VP. A Sr. Director Operations running three plants often carries more real-dollar scope than a VP Operations at a single-site peer. The classifier weighs scope and span of control, not just the title prefix.
What falls outside this bucket: Operations Manager and Senior Operations Manager (sub-Director tier), Plant Manager (an IC-equivalent at single-site companies), Shift Supervisor, and Process Improvement Specialist. The executive gate filters these before any role reaches your inbox.

How classification gets to this category
Operations role classification follows the same multi-stage pipeline as every other role type, with Operations-specific signals at three stages:
- Title recognition. "COO," "Chief Operating Officer," "VP Operations," "GM" (when scoped as a P&L owner), "Head of Operations," and "Director of Operations" are recognized directly. The lookup table covers hundreds of Operations title variants across healthcare, technology, and industrial conventions.
- Compensation threshold. $235K+ base is the exec-tier floor for this role type — higher than Marketing or HR because COO and VP Operations seats trend toward larger total comp. Roles below this threshold in unambiguous Operations titles are flagged for manual review rather than auto-classified.
- JD signals for ambiguous cases. GPT reads the job description for P&L scope, headcount of the operating org reporting in, multi-site or multi-function ownership, and CEO reporting line. A COO reporting to the CEO carries a different tier signal than a "VP Operations" reporting into the COO at a larger enterprise. See the AI Classification page for the full signal hierarchy.
The classifier also has a negative filter: "Operations Manager," "Senior Operations Manager," "Plant Manager" (single-site), "Shift Manager," and "Operations Specialist" are explicitly blocked from the executive gate.
How matching works for your search
Matching on COO/Operations is conjunctive. Every dimension you add narrows the result set rather than expanding it.
Example: select COO/Operations + Healthcare and your inbox shows Operations executive roles at hospitals, payers, and IDNs only — not every COO role on the platform, and not every Healthcare role regardless of function. You get the intersection.
Tier filtering works on top. If you want only VP-tier and above Operations roles — filtering out Director-tier for now — the seniority-tier setting does that cleanly. Or restrict to CXO-tier only to see pure COO seats. Each filter layer multiplies precision without requiring you to manually scan for noise.
