The Director tier is broad by design. It covers Director, General Manager, Regional Manager, Country Manager (where P&L responsibility is regional rather than company-wide), Dean (in higher education), and Head-of at smaller organizations where that title carries Director-level scope.
Director-tier roles typically own one function or one regional operation, have 5 to 30 direct reports, and manage $1M to $20M of P&L or functional budget. At growth-stage companies, a "Director of Engineering" with 20 reports and full-stack ownership often carries VP-equivalent operational scope — the classifier weighs company size into its tier assignment, which is why two "Director of Engineering" postings may resolve to different tier tags depending on the employer.
What falls outside: "Associate Director" titles (typically mid-level, not exec), "Director of Admissions" or "Director of Recruiting" in non-exec HR contexts, and individual-contributor-adjacent director titles without team ownership. Director-tier classification applies a broader title-recognition pass than Sr. Director, combined with more active negative filtering:
- Title signal recognition. "Director" (exact), "General Manager," "Regional Manager," "Country Manager," and "Dean" are recognized directly. "Head of [X]" at organizations below 300 employees is treated as Director-tier rather than VP-tier unless compensation or reporting signals indicate otherwise.
- Negative-keyword filtering. "Associate Director," "Director of Admissions," "Director of Recruiting" (in non-exec HR contexts), and similar low-scope uses of the Director title are explicitly blocked. The Director tier has the broadest functional spread of any seniority level on the platform. If you're targeting a specific function, combining Director tier + a role-type filter (e.g., Finance or Technology) significantly tightens the result set.
