C-Suite Executive Roles — CEO, CFO, CTO, CRO, COO, CMO, CHRO
More than 5,000 executive sources scanned daily — every named C-suite seat across 35 industries. Smaller than VP volume because the seats are scarcer, but every one is a board-visible role.
Top role types
What this category covers
The C-Suite tier covers every named C-level seat: CEO and President, CFO, CTO and CIO, CRO (Revenue and Risk), COO, CMO, CHRO (and Chief People Officer), CPO (Product), CDO (Data), CSO (Strategy and Scientific), CCO (Compliance and Communications), CISO, and Chief Legal Officer / General Counsel at the head-of-legal seat.
The C-suite tier is fundamentally smaller than VP because the seats are scarce — there is one CEO per company, one CFO, and so on. Yet each represents a board-visible, exec-committee role. The classifier counts a "Founder/Co-founder serving as CEO" in CXO when the CEO function is real (not honorary), even when titled "Founder."
What falls outside CXO and into VP tier instead: SVPs and EVPs without C-prefix who report to a C-suite peer; "Head of [Function]" titles that lack exec-committee membership; and Managing Directors at consulting firms (these classify into the Consulting industry's Partner-tier signal, which sits in CXO via a different path).

How classification gets to this category
C-Suite tier classification combines title prefix with industry-specific rulesets — a "VP" at one industry can sit at CXO tier under another industry's ruleset. This is why we publish 12 industry-specific rulesets rather than a single global title-to-tier map.
- Title-prefix recognition. Any title starting with "Chief" or matching the named-C-suite list (CEO, CFO, CTO, etc.) is a primary CXO signal. The lookup recognizes prefix variants ("Chief Marketing & Brand Officer," "Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer") via partial matching.
- Industry-aware mapping. At an investment bank, "Managing Director" can be CXO-equivalent. At a tech startup, "Founder & CEO" is CXO regardless of the Founder prefix. At a Big Four consultancy, "Senior Partner" is CXO. The 12 industry rulesets carry these mappings explicitly.
- JD signals for ambiguous cases. GPT reads the job description for direct CEO reporting (the strongest CXO confirm signal), board exposure, exec-committee membership, and the "owns the function company-wide" language that distinguishes CXO from senior VP. See the AI Classification page for the full signal hierarchy.
The classifier also has a negative filter: "Acting" or "Interim" prefixes route to a separate flag (still surfaced, but tagged), "VP and Chief of Staff to the CEO" is treated as VP unless the seat carries CXO-equivalent scope, and titles like "Chief Product Manager" (an IC role at some companies) are blocked from CXO tier.
How matching works for your search
Matching on CXO tier alone returns every named C-suite role across all industries and all functions. Layer additional filters to narrow.
Example: CXO + Healthcare Payers & Providers shows the C-suite of every hospital system, payer, and IDN — about 211 seats. Add + CFO/Finance and you narrow to healthcare CFOs only — about 60–70 seats at any given moment. Each filter layer is conjunctive; you get the intersection, not the union.
The most common pattern from candidates targeting C-suite seats: pick CXO tier first, then layer one or two industries plus a single role-type. Three filters is usually the sweet spot. More than three and you're often filtering down to a handful of roles per week — useful for a focused search, but worth knowing in advance.
