The Energy & Utilities industry spans the full energy sector: upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas; integrated investor-owned utilities (IOUs); independent power producers (IPPs); transmission and distribution operators; renewables developers (solar, wind, storage); and grid-edge / energy-software platforms.
Energy is heavily onsite. Executive remote policy in this industry skews ~65% onsite, 25% hybrid, 10% remote — much closer to industrial-manufacturing than technology. Plant operations, field operations, and regulated-utility headquarters anchor most senior roles to a specific location. The classifier surfaces remote-friendly seats explicitly so candidates can filter accurately.
Functions over-represented in Energy & Utilities: COO/Operations (plant and field ops), CTO/Engineering (engineering at IPPs, grid software at utilities, AI/ML at renewables), and CFO/Finance (regulated utility capital structure, project finance at renewables developers). Heavy in CXO and VP-tier seats; thinner at Director-tier than tech-heavy industries.

How classification gets to this category
Energy & Utilities industry classification follows the same multi-stage pipeline as every other industry, with energy-specific signals at the company-tagging stage:
- Company industry tagging. The company is identified via NAICS codes (211, 213, 221, 237 for energy infrastructure), regulatory filings (FERC, state PUC), and a curated allowlist of energy and utilities firms — including IOUs, IPPs, and large renewables developers.
- Sub-sector tagging. The classifier sub-tags O&G majors, IOUs, IPPs, renewables developers, and energy software separately — surfaced as filter facets in the inbox UI. A "VP Operations" at an IOU has different scope than a "VP Operations" at a renewables developer; sub-sector context is preserved through to the candidate.
- JD signals for boundary cases. GPT reads the job description for energy-specific signals (megawatts of capacity, well-count, transmission-line references, regulatory framework citations) when the company allowlist is ambiguous. Editorial review catches edge cases — particularly diversified industrial conglomerates with energy divisions. See the AI Classification page for the full signal hierarchy.
The classifier explicitly excludes from Energy & Utilities: pure carbon-credit traders (these are Climate & Sustainability), oilfield-services-only software companies (these are Technology), and water utilities classified separately.
How matching works for your search
Matching on Energy & Utilities is conjunctive. Every dimension you add narrows the result set rather than expanding it.
Example: select Energy & Utilities + COO/Operations and your inbox shows Operations executive roles at energy companies only — not every Energy role regardless of function, and not every COO role across the platform. You get the intersection.
Tier filtering works on top. If you want only Director-tier and above Energy roles — useful for tracking the promotion-feeder layer into VP — the seniority-tier setting does that cleanly. Or restrict to CXO-tier only for pure C-suite Energy seats. Each filter layer multiplies precision without requiring you to manually scan for noise.
