It spans Chief Legal Officer, General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, Associate General Counsel, EVP Legal, SVP Legal, VP Legal, Senior Director Legal, and Director Legal seats, all classified at the executive tier.
The CLO/GC variation matters. Some companies prefer "Chief Legal Officer" as the C-suite title; others use "General Counsel" with executive-committee membership. The classifier treats CLO and GC at the head-of-legal seat as the same tier signal — what matters is the reporting line and exec-team membership, not the prefix.
What falls outside: Senior Counsel and Staff Attorney (IC tier despite seniority), Associate Counsel, Compliance Manager (sub-Director), Paralegal, and Contract Manager. The executive gate filters these before any role reaches your inbox.

How classification gets to this category
Legal role classification follows the same multi-stage pipeline as every other role type, with Legal-specific signals at three stages:
- Title recognition. "GC," "General Counsel," "Chief Legal Officer," "Deputy GC," "VP Legal," and "Associate General Counsel" are recognized directly. The lookup reconciles CLO/GC variants and the AGC/Deputy GC distinction.
- Compensation threshold. $250K+ base is the exec-tier floor for GC and CLO seats — Legal trends toward higher base comp than most exec functions. Director-tier Legal sits at $200K+. Roles below threshold in unambiguous Legal titles are flagged for manual review rather than auto-classified.
- JD signals for ambiguous cases. GPT reads the job description for direct-CEO reporting (the strongest GC tier signal), board-and-committee exposure, regulated-industry domain expertise (banking, insurance, healthcare), and the GC-with-CCO-reporting-in pattern that distinguishes a true exec GC from a senior in-house attorney. The classifier also has a negative filter: "Senior Counsel" (IC at most firms), "Staff Attorney," "Associate Counsel," "Compliance Manager" (sub-Director), and "Contract Manager" are explicitly blocked from the executive gate.
How matching works for your search
Matching on General Counsel/Legal is conjunctive. Every dimension you add narrows the result set rather than expanding it.
Example: select GC/Legal + Banking, Financial Services & Investments and your inbox shows Legal executive roles at banks and asset managers only — not every GC role on the platform, and not every Banking role regardless of function. You get the intersection.
Tier filtering works on top. If you want only CXO-tier Legal roles — pure General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer seats — the seniority-tier setting does that cleanly. Or filter to Director-tier or Senior Director-tier to isolate the AGC and senior-director feeder layer below VP. Each filter layer multiplies precision without requiring you to manually scan for noise.
